The plurality of sales in the Americas was on the Xbox 360, while sales in “Others” were more evenly distributed between the platforms, and smaller overall than Americas sales.
The game looks very good and very fun. I will review it after playing it.Except for a few hardy strains of bacteria, any other creature would have been destroyed -- but tardigrades handled the voyage as though it were a dry spell on their local moss patch.
"They have claws and eyes. They are real animals. And this is the first time such an animal was tested in space," said Petra Rettberg, an Institute of Aerospace Medicine microbiologist.
Better known as water bears, tardigrades are eight-legged invertebrates visible to the naked eye and found throughout the world, making them a biology class favorite.
They're capable of halting their metabolisms during times of extreme privation, and can repair DNA damage caused by extraordinary doses of radiation -- a phenomenon that's piqued scientific curiosity and prompted researchers to shoot tardigrades into naked orbit around the Earth.
"The repair -- how fast, how efficient, with or without errors -- is different, but basic damage is the same," said Rettberg, who helped design a tardigrade containment system attached to the Foton-M3 satellite, launched last September by a consortium of national space agencies.
The tardigrades had already been coaxed into an anhydrobiotic state, during which their metabolisms slow by a factor of 10,000. This allows them to survive vacuums, starvation, dessication and temperatures above 300 degrees Fahrenheit and below minus 240 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once in orbit, the tardigrade box popped open. Some were exposed to low-level cosmic radiation, and others to both cosmic and unfiltered solar radiation. All were exposed to the frigid vacuum of space.
Back on Earth, tardigrades that had basked in cosmic radiation revived and reproduced at rates comparable to an unexposed control group. Those dosed with solar radiation were less likely to wake -- but that even a few survived, wrote Rettberg's team in findings published today in Current Biology, was remarkable.
Just how the invertebrate astronauts protected themselves "remains a mystery," wrote the researchers. Rettberg's next task is to identify the responsible genes -- a basic step, perhaps, in better understanding and improving human DNA repair.
Tardigrades may even provide insights into adaptations necessary for survival in off-Earth colonies, though they could not live actively in the extreme and nutrient-poor environments of Mars or the moon.
However, Rettberg cautioned against expecting too much from such early findings.
"It'll just be interesting to see what the mechanisms are in tardigrades, compared to the very simple ones in bacteria and more complex systems in higher organisms," she said. "But in addition, it's just fun."
I don't know about you guys but when I first found out about Church of Scientology and followed some of their online videos and staff, I ALMOST BOUGHT IT. Yes they are that good. Now due to my nature I investigated a bit more and then it got very interesting. Especially when I also found the post/reply/messages to CoS from a group called Anonymous. I will not spoil it for you do your own homework. BUT here are some news about CoS getting sued but a woman in France.
If found guilty it could result in the controversial body’s main centers being closed down.
The charges, which also include claims of illegally prescribing drugs, were filed by a woman who complained that the Scientologists had allegedly brought about her financial ruin.
She claimed she was psychologically pressured into paying thousands of pounds for lessons, books, drugs and a device called an “electrometre” which the church says can measure a person’s mental state.
The case has taken ten years to come to court.
France’s professional pharmaceutical association and another plaintiff have also filed for charges.
Scientology is not banned in France.
It is a recognized religion in the United States, where it was founded in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Followers include Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
This latest court order refers the church’s main structure in France, the ASES-Celebrity Centre, and its bookshop for alleged “organized fraud”.
Both could be shut down if convicted, according to judicial sources.
The trial - for which no date has been set - is rare, as most previous cases targeted individuals but not the church itself.
The seven members on trial, including Alain Rosenberg, the manager of the ASES-Celebrity Centre, face a maximum seven year jail term if convicted.
The woman who complained was allegedly approached by Scientologists in a Paris street in 1998. At first she was offered a personality test, then invited to hear the results.
In his order, the judge found that the church had used “personality tests void of scientific value...with the sole aim of selling services or divers products.”
The 33-year old was allegedly gradually persuaded to hand over around £25,000 on books, communication and “life healing” lessons, as well as “purification packs”.
While claiming to “identify and resolve supposed psychological difficulties or favour personal development,” the judge said, the Scientologists’ “sole aim” was to “claim their fortune” by “exercising a psychological hold” over her.
The decision to proceed with the case went against a 2006 call by the Paris prosecutor’s office for it to be dismissed due to lack of evidence.
A lawyer for the plaintiffs described the judge’s decision as “courageous”.
The Church of Scientology denounced the ruling, saying it was being “stigmatized” by the courts.
"The special treatment reserved for the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center raises questions about the equality of the justice system and the presumption of innocence,” it said in a statement.
The film focuses on the two titular friends finding themselves making an amateur adult film in order to alleviate their considerable debts. As they enlist the help of their friends and begin making the film, they discover new feelings for one another. The Weinstein Co. is financing. Smith will direct from his own screenplay.
For the Movie trailer see the previous post.
Kevin Smith is victorious! The filmmaker, who had been given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA for his new film Zack and Miri Make a Porno, was forced to take the decision to the appeal process.
The rating would have prohibited anyone younger than 17 years old from seeing the movie, even when accompanied by an adult. The rating also would have prevented the film from being advertised in certain places and during certain times. Basically, The Weinstein Co probably wouldn’t have released the movie as an NC-17, because, of course, they need to make their money back.
So Smith brought the film to an appeals board, who gave the film a revised rating of Restricted! This is a huge victory for Smith. The film will be going out uncut and uncensored! (note: but uncensored and uncut, I actually mean as the latest cut he had handed into the MPAA)
It seems clear to me that any adult would understand the risk of bringing a minor to a movie with the word “porno” in the title. And besides, it is far from a porno - it’s a comedy. Sure it has nudity, but it is far from anything that can be viewed on Saturday late-night on HBO.
